Travel writing was always something a little alien to me. I mean, I was reading about someone else’s holiday? I did not quite understand the point, or see the appeal. That was until I started to travel a bit more myself. Once you hit the road, meet people and start to see strange things you can only wish you could tell your friends about them, and can’t wait to get home and spread the word. That is what travel writing is. We allow these people, these great writers, to tell us their stories in ways that only they can. They have a voice, usually a humourous one, and regale us with stories and tales from across the globe.
They’re not always stories about the majesty of landscapes; in fact oftentimes the most interesting ones are stories of people. After all, people are the strangest creatures in the world and no matter what culture or what country, the things that they do can still make us smile, laugh or cry. So find a writer whose voice you identify with, kick back and get transported to another, very real, place.
